Family alleges improperly cleaned tool was used during child's surgery at Children's Hospital

NEW ORLEANS – A family is seeking damages, claiming that a contaminated tool was used during a child's surgery.

Alex Thompson, Tina Thompson and Allan Thompson filed a suit against Children's Hospital in the Orleans Parish Civil District Court.

According to the claim, Allan Thompson underwent a surgery on July 26, 2012. The suit states that a hospital representative informed the family after the fact a tool was used during surgery that was clogged with biological and potentially biohazardous debris. The suit states Allan Thompson had to be tested for pathogens in his blood because of the incident.

The defendant is accused of failing to train personnel on the proper method to clean reusable medical devices, negligence and other counts.

The plaintiff is seeking an unspecified amount in damages. The plaintiff is represented by Ron A. Austin and Catherine Hilton of Ron Austin & Associates in Harvey.

The case has been assigned to Division G Judge Robin M. Giarrusso.
