NEW ORLEANS – A Belle Chasse man firefighter claims he was unlawfully suspended for engaging in protected activities.

Rene St. Pierre filed a complaint on Dec. 6 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana against Secretary of Navy Ray Mabus alleging that the Navy secretary violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff was employed the NAS/JRB Naval Fire Department. The plaintiff alleges that he was suspended from his employment on Jan. 22, 2015, which he claims was a result of him being listed as a witness in an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission complaint and as well as for filing his own complaint. The plaintiff holds Mabus responsible because the defendant allegedly subjected him to adverse disciplinary actions in retaliation for engaging in opposing protected activities.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks compensatory damages, attorney's fees and costs and all other statutory relief. He is represented by Margaret Hammond Jackson of Margaret Hammond, Attorney at Law in Slidell.
