BATON ROUGE – A Baton Rouge resident is accused of falsely reporting to the U.S. Social Security Administration that she and her husband had separated.

United States of America filed a complaint on March 24 in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana against Loretta Ann Brown citing the False Claims Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that between August 2001 and July 2016, defendant fraudulently received $89,216 in U.S. government funds because of concealing information used in determining program eligibility. The plaintiff holds Brown responsible because the defendant allegedly fraudulently reported to SSA that she and her husband had separated for the purpose of remaining eligible for Supplemental Security Income monthly payments.

The plaintiff seeks treble damages, plus civil penalties of $11,000 for each false claim and for such other and further relief as the court deems just and equitable. It is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Helina S. Dayries in Baton Rouge.
