New Orleans woman claims she was injured when streetcar stopped abruptly

NEW ORLEANS – A New Orleans woman is seeking damages after she was injured in a streetcar.

Margarita Ayala filed a lawsuit May 22 against Transit Management of Southeastern Louisiana Inc., doing business as Regional Transit Authority; Transdev Services Inc., also known as Veolia Transportation Services Inc.; and Old Republic General Insurance Corp. in Orleans Parish Civil District Court alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff was in a streetcar on May 23 when the incident occurred. The suit states that the defendant was the owner and operator of the streetcar. During the incident, the plaintiff was caused to lose her balance and fall down when the driver applied the brakes too quickly and too hard.

The defendant is accused of negligence by failing to drive with enough care, failing to warn of the danger and overall negligence.

The plaintiff seeks all reasonable damages, court costs, attorney fees and all appropriate relief. She is represented by attorneys Romualdo Gonzalez, Gloria Lastra of Braden, Gonzalez & Associates in Kenner.

The case has been assigned to Division J Judge Cherrell S. Taplin.
