LOUISIANA GOVERNOR'S OFFICE: Gov. Edwards Announces Boards and Commissions Appointments - 2/5/21

Louisiana Governor's Office issued the following announcement on Feb. 5.

Gov. John Bel Edwards announced his appointments to several Louisiana boards and commissions. 

Louisiana Board of Chiropractic Examiners

The Louisiana Board of Chiropractic Examiners serves to license and regulate chiropractors in the state of Louisiana.

Ned J. Martello D.C. of Denham Springs has been reappointed to the Louisiana Board of Chiropractic Examiners. Martello is the owner of Martello Chiropractic.

Drug Policy Board

The Drug Policy Board is responsible for identifying, examining, selecting or developing, and recommending or implementing drug control policies to more effectively combat illegal drug and alcohol abuse; evaluating how anti-drug monies are used in implementing related programs; identifying and evaluating the effectiveness of public awareness and drug prevention programs; and assessing the role of law enforcement in combating drug abuse and trafficking.

Hon. Scott U. Schlegel of Gretna has been appointed to the Drug Policy Board. Schlegel is a judge for the Louisiana 24th Judicial District Court.

Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Criminal Justice

The Mission of the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement (LCLE) is to improve the operations of the criminal justice and juvenile justice system and promote public safety by providing progressive leadership and coordination within the criminal justice community.

Stephen C. Dwight of Lake Charles has been appointed to the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Criminal Justice. Dwight is the district attorney for the 14th Judicial District and will serve as a person having a vital concern with law enforcement and the administration of criminal justice.

Council on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST)

The Council is responsible for developing and evaluating the curriculum of mandatory basic training courses for municipal officers, deputy sheriffs, state police, wildlife agents and all other persons commissioned as peace officers, defined by state law. Additionally, POST prescribes firearms training standards for individuals who hold law enforcement positions at the state, parish and municipal levels of government.

Stephen C. Dwight of Lake Charles has been appointed to the Council on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). Dwight is the district attorney for the 14th Judicial District and will serve as a district attorney.

Board of River Port Pilot Commissioners and Examiners (Calcasieu)

The Board of River Port Pilot Commissioners and Examiners (Calcasieu) serves to establish rules and regulations for the purpose of regulating pilots, pilot associations, masters, and owners of vessels on the navigable waters of the state of Louisiana.

Capt. Charles R. Gilchrist III of Lake Charles has been appointed to the Board of River Port Pilot Commissioners and Examiners (Calcasieu). Gilchrist is a ship pilot with Lake Charles Pilots and will serve as a licensed pilot.

Louisiana State Board of Practical Nurse Examiners

The mission of the LSBPNE is to protect the health, safety and welfare of the public by providing reasonable assurance that persons who practice practical nursing are competent, ethical practitioners with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities appropriate to the title and role of the licensed practical nurse.

Celeste P. Cogswell LPN of Prairieville has been appointed to the Louisiana State Board of Practical Nurse Examiners. Cogswell is the assistant director of nursing at Landmark South Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and will serve as a practical nurse representing the Louisiana Nursing Home Association.

Louisiana Emergency Response Commission (LERC)

The Louisiana Emergency Response Commission (LERC) coordinates and supervises implementation of the federal hazardous materials Emergency Planning and Community Right-To-Know Act within Louisiana. The LERC develops, coordinates, and leads the state emergency management program, enabling effective preparation for, response to, and recovery from emergencies and disasters in order to save lives, reduce human suffering, and minimize property loss.

Samuel Jones of Franklin has been appointed to the Louisiana Emergency Response Commission (LERC). Jones is the coordinator of the Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinator’s Office and will serve as a representative of environmental interests.

Lt. Col. Chavez Cammon of Prairieville has been appointed to the Louisiana Emergency Response Commission (LERC). Cammon is the deputy superintendent over the Patrol Division of Louisiana State Police and will serve as the designee of the Deputy Secretary of the Department of Public Safety.

Louisiana Physical Therapy Board

The Louisiana Physical Therapy Board licenses and regulates physical therapists and physical therapist assistants who wish to work in Louisiana. The Board is mandated to interpret the scope of practice for physical therapy, write regulations, and discipline licensees who have violated the law.

Judith L. Halverson of New Orleans has been reappointed to the Louisiana Physical Therapy Board. Halverson was nominated by the Louisiana Hospital Association and will serve as a physical therapist.

Louisiana Health Works Commission

The purpose of the Louisiana Health Works Commission is to serve as a collaborative working group to integrate and coordinate resources relative to health care workforce development within various state departments and key organizations.

Meg Bankston of Baton Rouge has been appointed to the Louisiana Health Works Commission. Bankston is the governor’s deputy director of legislative affairs and will represent the Office of the Governor. 

Group Benefits Estimating Conference

The Group Benefits Estimating Conference’s mission is to develop or gather information relating to group health and life insurance, premium rates, and budgeting as is determined by the conference principals as needed for the state planning and budget system.

Connie D. Nelson of Gonzales has been appointed to the Group Benefits Estimating Conference. Nelson is the director of finance and administration for the Office of the Governor.
