NEW ORLEANS -- A man claims that he was wrongfully terminated by a sugar refinery because of his race.

Johnny Taylor filed a complaint on June 24 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana against American Sugar Refining, Inc. d/b/a Domino Sugar Chalmette for racial discrimination and wrongful termination.

Taylor alleges that on May 18, 2018, he clocked out of work at American Sugar Refining. Taylor alleges that he was not notified his relief for the night had called off and he needed to stay to cover the shift.

On June 4, 2018, Taylor alleged that he was informed he was being terminated for abandonment of his position because he did not stay to cover the shift for the relief person who unknowingly called off. Two other junior employees who were working with Taylor the same night, and who were not Black, did not receive disciplinary actions for abandonment, the suit says.

Taylor alleges that on the night in question, he did not leave his station until his shift was over at 11 p.m.

Taylor seeks back pay and other monetary compensation, attorney fees and cost of suit. Taylor is represented by Victor R. Farrugia of Farrugia Law Firm, LLC.
