Lawsuit: Crossbow breaks user's thumb

Federal Court
Hammer gavel

NEW ORLEANS -- A crossbow maker wants to defend itself from a personal injury lawsuit in federal court.

Michael Boyd and Tina M. Boy filed a complaint last year in Orleans Parish District Court against Barnett Outdoors, LLC, and the company on July 30 removed it to New Orleans federal court.

According to the complaint, on November 16, 2019, Michael Boyd, went hog hunting near his home with a Barnett Crossbow, but ended the hunt and went home after not coming across any hogs. Boyd alleges that when he got home, he shot the bow at his personal target in order to release the bow's pressure, and upon doing so, his left thumb was struck by the bow's string as a result of the bow not being equipped with proper finger guards.

Because of this, Boyd's thumb suffered serious and permanent physical injuries, including a laceration and fracture, the suit says.

The Boyds seek compensation for damages including past and present suffering, future pain and suffering, medical expenses, loss of capacity to earn income, attorney's fees and cost of suit. The Boyds are represented by Gilbert V. Andry, IV.
