An Update from the LSBA President Regarding Hurricane Ida

Microphone2 1000x667

Louisiana State Bar Association issued the following announcement on Aug. 30.

I hope that this finds you safe and well and that you suffered minimal (or no) damage from Hurricane Ida. Unfortunately, many of our members across south central and southeast Louisiana suffered substantial personal and professional loss. In addition, ongoing power outages have prevented us from reopening the Bar Center but our staff is working remotely and our website is fully functional. We will continue to assess this evolving situation and ways we may assist Louisiana State Bar Association members.

The Louisiana Supreme Court will be closed through Sept. 19. Cases scheduled to be heard on the Court’s September docket have been postponed until the week of Oct. 18. The Court has issued an order extending prescription, peremption and abandonment. The Court has also issued an emergency suspension of time limitations in criminal matters. In addition, Courts throughout the state will be issuing their own orders regarding closures, etc. All of this information will be posted on the Louisiana Supreme Court’s website.

The LSBA has also created a disaster response message board where members of the legal community may post both things they need in the aftermath of Ida as well as resources available to those in need. Further, our disaster response page contains a wealth of resources. We encourage you to take advantage of it. As lawyers we have always and will continue to take care of our own.

We sincerely appreciate all of the offers of assistance from members not impacted by the storm, as well as our friends in other states. It is very likely that many of our colleagues will be seeking help once they have been able to assess their situations. We will work diligently to help facilitate those connections.

Again, the LSBA is here for you. We continue to keep you and your families in our thoughts and prayers. I spoke to Chief Justice Weimer today who also asked that I pass along his well wishes. The LSBA and the Supreme Court will continue to work for you. Please be safe.

Sincerely,

H. Minor Pipes III

2021-22 LSBA President
