A man's family is suing a host of companies after he died while cleaning a barge.

Maria Esperanza Castro Mirando and Fandy Melisa Alvarado Castro, representing the estate of Elisander Alvarado Villamil, filed the complaint in federal court against Zito Fleeting Inc., Intercoastal Repair Service Inc., Intercoastal Marine Repair Co Inc., Intercoastal Barge Cleaning Inc. and Intercoastal Barge Cleaning LLC.

According to the complaint, Villamil was employed by TREO Staffing and was part of a crew assigned to clean a barge located at the Zito Dock on January 26, 2021. During this operation, the complaint says a lack of safety measures such as guardrails or fall protection on the barge caused Villamil to be pulled into the Mississippi River by an entangled hose, leading to his death.

The plaintiffs seek compensatory damages.
