In the case of James Cregg versus Board of Supervisors of Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College, filed in the First Circuit Court of Appeal, State of Louisiana, with case ID 2023 CA 0127 on March 1, 2024, James Cregg has appealed against a judgment favoring the defendant. The lawsuit pertains to his employment termination from Louisiana State University (LSU) due to alleged NCAA rule violations.

James Cregg began his tenure as an offensive line coach for LSU's football team in 2018. His contract was extended till March 31, 2022 after a successful season in 2019. In the year following, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he reportedly violated NCAA rules by having in-person contact with a prospective student athlete and gifting him LSU gear.

Cregg initially denied these allegations during an interview with NCAA investigators on May 14, 2021. However, he confessed to his actions in a subsequent interview held on May 21, stating that he had indeed met the student and his mother and gifted the gear.

The plaintiff is seeking reversal of the trial court's judgment which favored the defendant. His employment was terminated for cause by Director of Athletics Scott Woodward on June 17, 2021 based on his admissions during interviews with NCAA enforcement staff.
