Tanisha Smith has filed a lawsuit against Jefferson Parish Human Services Authority and JeffCare in the United States District Court, Eastern District of Louisiana. The case, identified as 2:24-cv-00914-JCZ-JVM, was filed on April 11, 2024. The suit alleges violations of the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) by the defendants leading to wrongful termination.

Smith claims she began her employment with the defendants in 2018 and had to take medical leave due to health issues in April 2022. Despite keeping her employers informed about her health status and providing a doctor's note stating she could return to work on April 25, 2022, she was terminated on grounds of job abandonment.

The plaintiff seeks compensation for lost wages and other monetary losses resulting from her termination. She also seeks recovery of costs, reasonable attorney's fees, any reasonable expert fees, as well as interest on all sums as available under the FMLA.
