Following the EF2 tornado that hit parts of Slidell last Wednesday, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill wants to make sure people avoid roofing scams.

“People in Slidell were hit hard by a tornado last week. While citizens are rebuilding their homes and lives, they need to be on alert for scammers and untrustworthy contractors, and that includes hiring the right roofer if you have storm damage. My team wants you to be prepared, before hiring someone to do work on your home,” said Attorney General Liz Murrill.

Here are tips from our Public Protection Division on hiring a roofer:

Look for a local contractor with a good reputation who has been in business in the area for many years.  Stay away from “storm chasers” that come into the area from out of state after the storm and offer cheap, quick fixes.  Verify the local address and ask for references.

Make sure the contractor is licensed and bonded.

Get the quote in writing and be sure to get at least three options.

Beware of contractors asking for payment up front.  Reputable ones will not ask for a large down payment. Do not pay in cash up front. Whenever paying for a service, pay by check or with acredit card, that way you can dispute the charge if need be.

    Beware of door-to-door solicitors.

Do not believe the “I’ve got leftover shingles or materials” line.

Get a contract in writing, and do not sign it until you read it thoroughly.

Don’t fall for high pressure sales.  If they are in the area and are reputable, they won’t pressure you.
