U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Bernice Donald (ret.) to deliver LSU Law Rubin Visiting Professor of Law Lecture on Tuesday, April 8

LSU Law will welcome the Hon. Bernice Donald, who retired from the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in 2023, to the LSU campus on Tuesday, April 8 for her delivery of the 2025 Judge Alvin B. and Janice G. Rubin Visiting Professor of Law Lecture.

Her lecture, entitled “Can the Rule of Law Protect Us in Times of Challenge and Uncertainty?”, will take place at 5:30 p.m. in the Abell Conference Room of the Lod Cook Alumni Center on the LSU campus. The event is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 5 p.m., with a reception to follow the lecture.

“Judge Donald is a trailblazer, and we are honored to welcome her to our campus for this important lecture,” said LSU Law Dean Alena M. Allen. “This lecture fosters critically important dialogue around matters related to the judiciary. We thank the Rubin family for making her visit possible.”

Prior to her confirmation to the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in 2011, Judge Donald sat on the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee for 15 years. She also previously served as Judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Tennessee, becoming the first African American woman in the history of the United States to serve as a bankruptcy judge. Following her retirement from the federal bench, she joined the Burch, Porter & Johnson law firm in Memphis in 2024.

The Judge Alvin B. and Janice G. Rubin Visiting Professor of Law Program provides funds to bring outstanding legal scholars to the LSU Law Center. The late Judge Rubin was a 1942 graduate of LSU Law who served as a United States Circuit Judge for the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals from 1977 until his death in 1991. As a student at LSU Law, he was valedictorian of his class, graduated as a member of The Order of the Coif, and served as editor of Louisiana Law Review. He taught at LSU Law as an adjunct professor for 43 years.
