In a significant legal move, an individual with disabilities has taken action against a local business for alleged violations of accessibility laws. Daniel Todd filed a complaint on May 7, 2025, in the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana, Alexandria Division, against Petron, L.L.C., citing non-compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Louisiana Commission on Human Rights (LCHR).
The case revolves around Todd's claim that Petron, L.L.C., which owns and operates Common Point Shopping Center in Alexandria, Louisiana, has failed to provide adequate access for individuals with disabilities. Todd alleges that during his visits to the property—a strip mall featuring various stores and restaurants—he encountered numerous architectural barriers that deterred him from entering. Specifically, he cites insufficient designated-accessible parking spaces and improper slopes in access aisles as major obstacles. "Until these physical barriers are remedied," Todd states in his complaint, "I am deterred from visiting the Property."
Todd's lawsuit accuses Petron of discrimination under both federal and state laws designed to protect individuals with disabilities. He argues that these barriers prevent him from enjoying full access to goods and services offered at the shopping center. According to Todd, removing these barriers is "readily achievable" and would not impose an undue burden on Petron.
In seeking justice, Todd requests several forms of relief from the court. He demands declaratory judgment stating that Petron's property violates ADA and LCHR standards. Additionally, he seeks injunctive relief compelling Petron to make necessary alterations to ensure accessibility for individuals with mobility impairments. Todd also asks for compensatory damages under state law due to what he describes as discriminatory conduct by Petron.
