Claiming they "got the run around" by insurance companies, Terrebonne General Medical Center has filed a lawsuit to obtain a past due balance of more than $62,000 for an insured patient.
Hospital Service District No. 1, A Political Subdivision of the Parish of Terrebonne, State of Louisiana doing business as Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC) filed suit against Aetna, Inc. doing business Aetna Life Insurance Co., Cigna Healthcare, BP Corp. of North America and Jessica Breasher June 10 in Terrebonne Parish District Court.
According to the court documents, defendant Jessica Breasher incurred a medical bill in the amount of $146,000 between February 2008 and May 2008. After applying credits, Breasher was owed TGMC approximately $62,000. Breshear had health insurance provided by her or her family member's employer, BP.
Breasher initially had health insurance coverage through Cigna but mid-way through her treatment, her provider changed to Aetna.
Therefore, Cigna refused to pay for further treatment.
"Aetna, however, refused to make payments as it was Aetna's position that defendant Cigna should still provide coverage to defendant Breasher until her discharge from TGMC," the complaint reads.
TGMC argues that if neither insurance company is responsible for the balance then defendant BP is liable as it provided healthcare insurance to Breasher.
In addition to the past due amount of $62,000, TGMC is asking for attorney fees and court costs.
The plaintiff is represented by Houma attorney Thomas K. Watkins, Jr.
U.S. District Judge Helen G. Berrigan is assigned to the case.
