Family sues doctor for allegedly misjudging tumor and exacerbating spread of cancer

GRETNA – A New Orleans family is suing a local doctor's practice for alleged improper healthcare.

Ronald, Nelita, Samantha, Shaun, Leslie and Erin Ramey filed suit against Jefferson Pathology, LLC in the 24th Judicial District on July 13.

The Ramey's claim Ronald underwent abdominal surgery for a rectal tumor that was overseen by pathologist Dr. Barry W. Sartin of Pathology, LLC. The plaintiffs claim the defendant doctor did not properly diagnose the tumor and that only during surgery did he realize it went through the rectum and into surrounding muscle and other tissue and that the surgery resulted in the further spread of rectal cancer rather than rectifying it.

The defendant is accused of negligence.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for pain and suffering, mental anguish, loss of consortium and medical expenses.

The Ramey's are represented by Thomas A. Gennusa of Metairie-based Gennusa, Piacun & Ruli.

The case has been assigned to Division C Judge June Berry Darrensburg.

Case no. 717-082.
