Church sued by volunteer worker after accident involving scissor lift

Adam H. Weintraub

GRETNA – A Slidell man is suing a church for injuries he allegedly received in an incident that occurred when he was a volunteer worker.

Jermaine Moore filed suit against Starlight Missionary Baptist Church of Slidell, A-Rental Depot, KO & Associates and their insurers in the 24th Judicial District Court on July 26. Moore claims he was assisting four other volunteer workers in in replacing Starlight Missionary Church's light and sound system on July 29, 2011. The plaintiff alleges a deacon at the church asked the volunteers to move a scissor lift from the pulpit and that while they were in the process of moving it, the lift shifted and fell on top of him resulting in serious injuries to his torso and back. Moore asserts the injuries he received in the incident are permanent.

The defendant is accused of failing to warn users of the dangers of moving the lift, failing to properly train users how to use the lift, failing to provide appropriate personnel to complete the assignment and assigning untrained volunteers to move the lift.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for pain, suffering, disability, medical expenses, loss of wages, loss of earning capacity, travel expenses, emotional distress, loss of enjoyment of life and additional miscellaneous expenses.

Moore is represented by Adam H. Weintraub of Herman, Herman & Katz, LLC.

The case has been assigned to Division I Judge Nancy A. Miller.

Case no. 717-518.
