East Jefferson YMCA sued by woman who fell down stairs

GRETNA – A Jefferson Parish woman is suing a local fitness center for injuries she claims she received on its premises.

Maureen Simoneaux filed suit against YMCA of Greater New Orleans and East Jefferson YMCA in the 24th Judicial District Court on Aug. 27. Simoneaux claims she was exiting the walking track at the East Jefferson YMCA by stairwell when she fell due to lack of a handrail. The plaintiff alleges she broke her left foot and ankle in the fall.

The defendant is accused of failing to have appropriate handrails, failing to have appropriate lighting, failing to meet appropriate building safety codes and failing to warn of the hazard.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for physical pain and suffering, mental anguish, medical expenses, lost wages, embarrassment and humiliation.

Simoneaux is represented by Mark W. Smith of Metairie-based Mark W. Smith & Associates.

The case has been assigned to Division B Judge Cornelius E. Regan.

Case no. 718-594.
