GRETNA – A man who had recently bought a new car and took it in for its first oil change is suing the oil change provider and a mechanic after his engine was allegedly damaged beyond repair.

Henry Defraites filed suit against Royal Imports of Metairie LLC, Royal Honda, GT Automotive and United Fire & Indemnity Company in the 24th Judicial District Court on Sept. 27.

Defraites asserts that after he purchased a 2012 Honda Pilot he had his oil changed on Aug. 9 for its first oil change at GT Automotive. The plaintiff alleges that shortly after leaving the oil change his oil pressure warning light came on and after returning he was told to immediately visit a mechanic. Defraites claims that he visited Royal Honda who reset the warning notification light and told him there was no problem, however, shortly after he drove away the light came on again and he brought the car back which Royal Honda held for two days before informing him he would need a new engine because the current engine was severely damaged.

The defendant is accused of failing to properly perform an oil filter change, failing to properly diagnose the reason for the oil pressure light to continue to be illuminated, failing to keep the plaintiff from driving the vehicle before determining the cause of the engine oil warning light and failing to perform mechanic work on the vehicle in a proper manner.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for repair costs and rental car expenses.

Defraites is represented by Bradford H. Walker of Metairie-based Walker Daly LLP.

The case has been assigned to Division P Judge Lee V. Faulkner Jr.

Case no. 731-516.
