Kmart sued by woman allegedly injured in slip and fall at checkout

GRETNA – A customer at a local corporate retail store is suing after she was allegedly injured in a fall near the store’s checkout counter.

Juanita January filed suit against Kmart Corp. in the 24th Judicial District Court on Feb. 18.

January asserts that she was a customer at the Kmart located at 7000 Veterans Memorial Blvd. in Metairie when she slipped and fell in liquid on the floor near the checkout area of the store. The plaintiff alleges she was injured in the incident.

The defendant is accused of failing to maintain its premises in a safe condition, failing to keep floors safe and free from liquid, failing to warn petitioner of danger and failing to properly maintain and inspect the premises.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for pain, suffering, mental anguish, loss of enjoyment of life, medical expenses and lost wages.

January is represented by attorney Ryan J. Hughes of New Orleans.

The case has been assigned to Division A Judge Raymond S. Steib Jr.
