Shopper sues after allegedly being injured by purse

2 present day burlington coat factory store copy

GRETNA – A shopper who claims she pricked her finger on a sharp object inside a purse she picked up is suing.

Lisa Mixon filed suit against Burlington Coat Factory of Louisiana LLC in the 24th Judicial District Court on May 29.

Mixon says she was shopping at the Burlington Coat Factory located on Williams Blvd. in Kenner, examining a large number of purses arranged on a display table when the incident occurred. She says she picked up one of the purses and was stuck in the small finger by a sharp object within the purse.

The plaintiff claims she reported the incident to management, requested a first aid kit, although one was not available, and gave a statement to the store manager. Mixon asserts she later visited a local hand clinic and a doctor found a foreign object had been embedded in her finger that had to be removed via a medical procedure and for which she has had to continually receive pain medication.

The defendant is accused of failing to examine merchandise prior to displaying it, allowing a dangerous object to cause injury and failing to protect patrons.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for pain and suffering, medical expense, mental anguish, lost wages, bodily injury, disfigurement and loss of enjoyment of life.

Mixon is represented by Robert T. Myers of Metairie-based Young Richard & Myers.

The case has been assigned to Division G Judge Robert A. Pitre Jr.

Case no. 738-929.
