Man alleges benzene-containing products caused injuries

NEW ORLEANS – A New Orleans man alleges exposure to chemicals in certain household products resulted in his contracting a disease.

Miles Elder and Angelina Elder filed a suit against CRC Industries Inc., Berryman Products Inc., W.M. Barr & Co. Inc., Radiator Specialty Co., United States Steel Corp., Shell Oil Co. and Harry's Hardware Inc. and Mike's Hardware and Supply LLC in the Orleans Parish Civil District Court on Oct. 21.

According to the claim, Miles Elder used products containing benzene that were manufactured or supplied by the defendants, including Liquid Wrench and Gunk. The suit states that the plaintiff suffered tissue damage and was diagnosed with multiple myeloma from extended uses and exposures to the products.

The defendants are accused of negligence through allowing their dangerous products to be used without proper warning and overall negligence.

The plaintiffs are seeking an unspecified amount in damages. The plaintiffs are represented by Stephen J. Austin and L. Eric Williams, both of Metairie.

The case has been assigned to Division I Judge Piper D. Griffin.
