NEW ORLEANS – An Orleans Parish woman is suing an Orleans Parish sheriff, alleging she was attacked by an inmate.

Sondra Allen Borne filed a lawsuit Feb. 17 against Marlin Gusman in his official capacity as sheriff of Orleans Parish and Traore Leigh in Orleans Parish Civil District Court, alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, on Feb. 25, 2016, Borne was attending a hearing at the Orleans Parish Magistrate Court. The suit states she was attacked by Leigh without due cause, leading to injuries for the plaintiff. The lawsuit states although Leigh was in custody of the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office, the officers made no moves toward protecting the plaintiff.

The defendants are accused of negligently failing to properly secure or manage inmates, failing to provide a safe environment for guests and failing to maintain the presence of a deputy to help manage the inmates.

Borne seeks all reasonable damages, court costs, attorney fees and all appropriate relief. She is represented by attorney Carolyn W. Gill-Jefferson of New Orleans.

The case has been assigned to Division B Judge Melvin Zeno.

Orleans Parish Civil District Court Case number 17-1597.
