Family of mentally ill man killed by Kenner SWAT team sue

GRETNA – A man with mental disabilities was allegedly wrongly killed by a SWAT team.

Joshua Brown and James L. Whitaker Jr. filed a suit on Jan. 19 against Kenner Police Department, Michael Glaser, Michael Romano and the City of Kenner through Mayor E. Ben Zahn III in the 24th Judicial District Court alleging wrongful death and excessive force.

According to the claim, the plaintiffs are seeking damages for an incident that took place on Jan. 23, 2017. The suit states that the plaintiff's loved one, Armond Jairon Chauncey Brown, was intentionally killed by the defendants. A SWAT team allegedly misunderstood the victim who was mentally ill to be dangerous and employed excessive force, which included tear gas and gunfire, leading to the victim's death.

The defendant is accused of wrongful death and excessive force.

The plaintiff is seeking all reasonable sums due, attorney fees and court costs. The plaintiff is represented by Kevin D. Thompson in Houma.

The case has been assigned to Division A Judge Raymond S. Steib Jr.
