ACLU joins case to represent plaintiff in alleged excessive force from Gretna Police Department

Federal Court
Police 09

NEW ORLEANS - A Harvey man wants payback after at least five Gretna Police Department officers allegedly partook in excessive force and multiple civil rights violations.

Plaintiff Kevin Beauregard filed the complaint on April 30 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. The defendants in the case include officers Christopher Breaux, Kayla English, Timothy Kennedy, Roland Kindell and Arthur Lawson and other unidentified officers.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff was involved in a traffic stop late in the evening on May 5, 2020. Beauregard says he was wrongfully arrested without cause after the stop and wasn't read his Miranda warning and rights.

The plaintiff was then allegedly punched, kicked and strangled by the defendants while he was restrained in handcuffs. He further accuses the officers of body slamming him into a wall while cuffed and strangling and beating him while he was cornered in a jail cell.

The complaint says that the Gretna Police Department has a history of violence and discrimination against the Black community, including the plaintiff.

The defendants are charged with excessive force, battery, negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress, vicarious liability and conspiracy.

Beauregard is represented by the ACLU Foundation of Louisiana and Alston and Bird LLP.
