The United States of America has filed a lawsuit against Dorothy Braxton in the United States District Court, Eastern District of Louisiana. The case, identified as 24-CV-0915, was lodged on April 12, 2024. The U.S., represented by Assistant United States Attorney Churita H. Hansell, alleges that Braxton failed to repay a debt owed to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The DHS/FEMA issued a "Certificate of Indebtedness" to Braxton on September 28, 2018, citing her delinquency in repaying the debt due to ineligibility for some or all disaster assistance under the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act. Despite several notifications from DHS/FEMA about the outstanding amount of $3,885.41 plus interest and penalties, Braxton allegedly did not respond.

The plaintiff is seeking a judgment in its favor for the total unpaid principal amount of the DHS/FEMA debt ($3,885.41), interest through December 18, 2019 ($206.28), penalties ($874.49), administrative fees ($1,812.34), totaling $6,778.52 plus post-judgment interest and costs.
