Wal-Mart shopper sues after slipping in water

A Wal-Mart shopper has filed a lawsuit against the store after she slipped in water that was dripping from the store's ceiling.

Claiming she suffered painful injuries, Octavia Parfait filed suit against Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Wal-Mart Louisiana on June 8, 2010 in Terrebonne Parish District Court. The defendants removed the case to federal court in New Orleans on April 18.

The incident occurred on May 22, 2010 as Parfait was shopping at a Houma Wal-Mart. She states she was looking for a register to check out, when she slipped in water that was dripping from the ceiling. She suffered a knee injury, the suit claims.

Wal-Mart is accused of failing to correct the dangerous and unsafe conditions and failing to warn of the unsafe conditions.

The plaintiff is seeking damages for medical expenses, pain and suffering, interest and court costs.

Parfait is represented by Houma attorney Michael J. Elliot.

U.S. District Judge Martin L. C. Feldman is assigned to the case.
