NEW ORLEANS – A New Orleans woman is suing a local school district for injuries her son allegedly sustained when he slipped and fell down three flights of stairs.

Dorothy Carter filed suit on Jan. 13 in the Orleans Parish Civil District Court against the Recovery School District and its overseers.

Carter claims her son slipped in a puddle of water and fell down three flights of stairs at James Weldon Johnson Elementary. The filing asserts Carter's son had to seek medical attention, but does not state what specific injuries he received from the fall.

The plaintiff alleges the school was negligent in considering the safety of others, failed to maintain school property, did not place caution signs near the dangerous premises and did not remove the dangerous substance from the stairs of the property.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for mental anguish, medical expenses and physical pain and suffering.

Carter is being represented by New Orleans-based attorney Lawrence J. Galle.

The case has been assigned to Division I Judge Piper D. Griffin.
