Jewish Community Center accused of negligently maintaining treadmill

GRETNA – A New Orleans lawyer is seeking damages over claims that a community center caused a treadmill to malfunction, thus causing him injuries.

Darryl T. Landwehr filed a suit against the Jewish Community Center and Zurich American Insurance Co. in the 24th Judicial District Court on June 14.

According to the claim, the plaintiff was a patron at the Jewish Community Center, located at 3747 W. Esplanade Ave. in Metairie on June 23, 2015, when the incident occurred. The suit states that while the plaintiff was using a treadmill at the center, it malfunctioned, causing the plaintiff personal injuries. The suit states additionally that the malfunction of the machine was caused by improperly removing the lubricant from the belt of the machine by wiping the belts.

The defendant community center is accused of negligence through failure to properly maintain the equipment, failure to take the steps necessary to avoid such occurrences, failure to provide guests with a safe environment and overall negligence in relation to the suit.

The plaintiff is seeking an unspecified amount in damages. He is representing himself. The case has been assigned to Division A Judge Raymond S. Steib Jr.
